There is a story told of Lady Godiva who took pity on the people of Coventry, who were suffering grievously under her husband’s oppressive taxation. Lady Godiva appealed again and again to her husband, who stubbornly refused to show grace. At last, getting tired of her pleading, he said he would grant her request if she would strip naked and ride through the streets of the town.
Lady Godiva took him at his word and, after issuing a proclamation that all persons should stay indoors and shut their windows, she rode through the town, clothed only in her long hair. In the end, Godiva’s husband kept his word and abolished the burdensome taxes.
What a wonderful story of compassion and sacrifice! I wonder if I would be able to do that. I know of a person who did more than that, Jesus Christ “who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing… he humbled himself and became obedient to death – even death on a cross!” (Phil. 2:6,8).
What a compassionate and loving God we have. He gave himself so that we may have life and this is available to anyone who receive Him (John 1:12). Perhaps, you will think about His loving grace whenever you eat Godiva chocolate. ^_^
Have a wonderful week!
