You may have heard about the talk (as some think it is controversial) regarding Starbucks’ holiday cups. Keep in mind that Starbucks never had their cups with an image of manger, cross, or other specific images that relate to “Christian” Christmas. It has always been a simple snowflakes, snowman, and/or decorative ornaments for winter season reminder.
However, there are some Christians who think Starbucks is out in a “war on Christmas”. Whether Starbucks employees are allow to say “Merry Christmas” or not, I don’t know. One thing I do know is as Ed Stetzer said, “It is NOT Starbucks’ job to share the love of Jesus. It’s your job”.
When Jesus said, “go and make disciples of all nations”, he wasn’t talking to corporations but to individual followers of Christ. It is MY job to proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ and not Starbucks, Barnes & Noble, or even Chick-fil-A’s responsibility.
So it doesn’t bother me if Starbucks uses red cups, cups with snowman or their everyday cup. Maybe Starbucks is being sensitive to politically correctness. Nevertheless, it would bother me if “Christians” to tone down, keep silent and think nothing much of Christmas other than “holiday”.
In fact, when we sip our Americano, Latte, or Cappuccino in whatever cup Starbucks serves us in, I hope it would remind YOU and ME of our responsibility in sharing Christ!
Have a blessed week!
