All Lives Matter

maxresdefaultOn June 12th Sunday early morning, a gunman opened fire on crowded gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, killing 49 people and wounding 53 people.

It seems obvious that the gunman targeted a specific group.  It is sad that people turn their hate toward a certain group whether it is out of social, political, sexual, or religious base.  In fact, if we go back just a few years, all people groups were targeted and killed; African Americans, students, Sikhs, police officers, Jews, and Christians.

As I am saddened by so many lives taken senselessly, I am also deeply disturbed by many use this kind of incident to push their agenda.  It is clear in the Bible that ALL lives matter.  When God gave, “Thou shall not kill” commandment, he wasn’t targeting a certain nationality or people group.  As “Black lives matters”, so does “LGBQ lives matter” and all lives!  Here are the 3 simple reasons:

  1. Everyone is created in the image of God;
  2. God loves all people; and
  3. Jesus Christ came and died for all people;

I don’t know what exactly motivated this gunman to do what he did but I know one thing about Jesus Christ.  Jesus was motivated by His love for us that he came and “died” for people than “killing” people like this gunman.  Jesus said, “But I say to you who hear, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you” (Luke 6:27).

Let’s love and practice loving people as Christ did for “all lives matter”!

Jury Duty

jury-duty (1)I am summoned for jury duty tomorrow for United States District Court Northern District of California.  If I am selected, this case can last up to two months.  I am sure there are others things I can do then spend all they serving as one of the jurors.  However, this is an honor and responsibility as a United States citizen which I am willing to fulfill.

Whoever is going to be on trial, he/she needs jurors who will be unbiased and clear in their thinking.  Therefore, I pray that I will be at my best for tomorrow’s selection process.  I will not try to get out of jury duty or show any form of bias toward the one being tried.

This jury duty summon reminds me of the judgement that I had to deal with before God. How thankful I am that my “sins” don’t have to be a jury trial.  In fact, it has been already acquitted by Jesus Christ.  Apostle Paul says in Romans 5:1, “Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ”.

Lord, thank you for defending me and paying for my sin when I am “guilty”!

Here and There

It was a mild October afternoon in 1982 and Badger Stadium in Madison, Wisconsin was packed.  Over 78,000 die-hard University of Wisconsin fans were watching their beloved football team take a beating by Michigan State.  What seemed odd was that as the score became more and more lopsided bursts of cheers and applause kept being heard in the stands.  It was only natural that some people began to wonder who these strange people were who were cheering while their team was being pummeled.

As it turns out seventy miles away from Badger stadium the Milwaukee Brewers were beating the St. Louis Cardinals in game three of the World Series.  Many of the Badger fans in the stands were listening to portable radios and responding to something else besides what was happening right in front of their eyes.

In THIS arena…a lopsided defeat.  In THAT arena…VICTORY!

This is how Christian life is like in certain cases.  We may face minor defeats but we know for sure a victory is coming.  Even though what we face today may be hard… but remember what Paul said in 1 Cor. 15:57, “Thanks be to God who gives us victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”

May the grace of God be with you!

Nezahualcoyotl

I have never heard of the name Nezahualcoyotl (1402–1472) until today (from Our Daily Bread).  How do one pronounce his name?  Though there is a variation, his name means “Hungry Coyote,” and it suits him since his writings show a spiritual hunger.

Netzahualcoyótl

Netzahualcoyótl

As a poet and ruler in Mexico before the arrival of the Europeans, he wrote, “Truly the gods, which I worship, are idols of stone that do not speak nor feel. . . . Some very powerful, hidden and unknown god is the creator of the entire universe.  He is the only one that can console me in my affliction and help me in such anguish as my heart feels; I want him to be my helper and protection.”

If what he wrote was put in the context of 21st century United States, it may sounded like, “Truly the gods (prosperity, pleasure, power, and popularity), which we worship, are idols that do not give true contentment in present life or provide an eternal life after death… There is only one true God, Yahweh, who created all things through Jesus Christ.  He is the only Savior who can give us life and have it abundantly.  I wish to know Him.”

I don’t know if Nezahualcoyotl came to know the true Giver of life during his reign but I do wish all of us would come to know this true God who is the giver of life.

The writers of Psalm 42 cried out, “My soul thirsts for God, for the living God” (v. 2).  It is my prayer that we would thirst for God, the one true living God.

Have a blessed week!

Self Worth

Once, a young man went to see a wise man, and said to him, “I have come seeking advice, for I am tormented by feelings of worthlessness and no longer wish to live.  Everyone tells me that I am a failure and a fool.  I beg you, Master, help me!”

The wise man glanced at the youth, and said, “Forgive me, but I am very busy right now and cannot help you.  There is one urgent matter in particular which I need to attend to…” and here he stopped, for a moment, thinking, then added, “But if you agree to help me, I will happily return the favor.”

’Of course, Master!’ happily replied the young man.

“Good”, said the wise man, and took off a small ring with a beautiful gem from his finger.  ’Take my horse and go to the market place!  I urgently need to sell this ring in order to pay off a debt.  Try to get a decent price for it, and do not settle for anything less than one gold coin!  Go right now, and come back as quick as you can!”

cat-lion-jfk-martial-arts-courage-karate-for-kids-3-2015The youth took the ring and galloped off.  When he arrived at the market place, he showed it to the various traders, who at first examined it with close interest.  But no sooner had they heard that it would sell only in exchange for gold than they completely lost interest.  Some of the traders laughed openly at the boy, others simply turned away.  Only one aged merchant was decent enough to explain to him that a gold coin was too high a price to pay for such a ring, and that he was more likely to be offered only copper, or at best, possibly silver.

When he heard these words, the youth became very upset, for he remembered the old man’s instruction not to accept anything less than gold.  Having already gone through the whole market looking for a buyer among hundreds of people, he saddled the horse and set off.  Feeling thoroughly depressed by his failure, he returned to see the wise man.

“Master, I was unable to carry out your request”, he said.  “At best I would have been able to get a couple of silver coins, but you told me not to agree to anything less than gold!  But they told me that this ring isn’t worth that much.”

“That’s a very important point, my boy!” the wise man responded.  “Before trying to sell a ring, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to establish how valuable it really is!  And who can do that better than a jeweler?  Ride over to him and find out what his price is.  Only don’t sell it to him, regardless of what he offers you!  Instead, come back to me straightaway.”

The young man once more got on the horse and set off to see the jeweler.  The jeweler examined the ring through a magnifying glass for a long time, then weighed it on a set of tiny scales.  Finally, he turned to the youth and said, “Tell your master that right now I can’t give him more than 58 gold coins for it.  But if he gives me some time, I will buy the ring for 70.”

“70 gold coins?!’ exclaimed the young man.  He laughed, thanked the jeweler and rushed back at full speed to the wise man.

When the wise man heard the story from very excited young man, he told him, “Remember, my boy, that you are like this ring.  Precious, and unique!  And only a real expert can appreciate your true value.  So why are you wasting your time wandering through the market and heeding the opinion of any old fool?”

Every one of you are precious and valuable in Christ.  Do not let this world or some critical people around you tell you other wise.  Remember, you are created in His image!

Have a blessed week!

Lessons I Have Learned from Moving

12802762_10153865003083213_2304014079085553666_nAfter living at this place (the house in the picture) for 14+ years, we had to move.  As I was taking this picture for the last time before handing my key over to the landlord, I got a bit  emotional.  A flood of God’s grace and faithfulness was reminded.  God had given so many wonderful memories in this place as we were raising our children and serving the Lord.

However, there are some lessons that God had revealed to me throughout the whole process.  Let me just quickly list some of them and hopefully the list will be a blessing to you as well:

  • Don’t hold unto things too hard and too much, when you have to let go of them, it will be painful (I guarantee you will have to let go of them sooner or later);
  • Live a simple life.  It is easier in many ways (definitely when it comes to moving);
  • My home is not the building and stuffs inside but the place where my love ones and I live, so the size and quality of “stuffs” are not as important;
  • Don’t focus on upgrading visible things more than investing into eternal things;
  • I am a pilgrim on this earth.  No matter where I live, it is NOT a permanent place for me.  My ultimate and the permanent place is in heaven with the Lord; and
  • Though I had a good landlord, he wasn’t perfect and I wasn’t a perfect tenant.  I will be in a perfect relationship with my “land”Lord, Savior and Father in heaven.

I am so grateful for God’s faithfulness.  As we were packing, there were tons of reminders of His blessings and provisions.  God is good!

Lord, thank you!  Now, we look forward to more of your blessings in the new place you have provided.  ^_^

Have a wonderful and blessed week!

Ingrown Toenail

Ingrown_nail_002I am sure all of us had an experience of ingrown toenail before.  It hurts!!!

Ingrown toenail happens because, as the name gives away, a toenail is grown inward than outward.  The main reason for that is due to a pressure from outside whether a tight or narrow shoes or even socks or stockings that are too tight. This ingrown toenail causes a pain beyond toe and in a severe case, surgery is required.

There are some Christians who become like an ingrown toenail.  All they want is how the church will minister to them, care for them, and cater toward them.  They become more of pain than pleasure.  A person becomes an ingrown Christian when he focuses on reaching in than reaching out as the Great Commission tells us.  Jesus said, “Go out” (italic added by me)!

I hope whenever I have an ingrown toenail, I would reflect on myself and see if I have become narcissistic Christian.  Not only it hurts me but it hurts the body of Christ.  Let’s grow outward!

Have a blessed week!

A New Place

After living in our current place for about 14 plus years, we are moving.  Looking back, finding this place to rent was something God had done.  We have moved from Texas and didn’t know where to find a place to live with 3 young children.  Looking for a condo or house for rent, I started looking for a place near the church I was serving in (Martinez) but couldn’t find anything within our budget or size.  When I was desperate, God had provided the place we ended up which was more expensive location and better school district.

It was a great location (we didn’t know then) and since we moved in, the landlord had been gracious and kept the rent way below the market price.  Now, he is trying to sell the place.  As he gave us a notice to vacate the place by end of Feb., it was a shock for us.

We were shocked because we thought we will see our kids all finish through their high school while we are living here but the Lord had a different plan.  As I was preparing for 2016 (in late Dec.), it seems though God had placed in my heart to focus on the theme of “Journey of Faith” in 2016.  So the journey of faith began with my life.  Having to move when rent is very high and our income hasn’t changed much.  Moving when there are less vacant places to find.  3 beds and 2 baths are too high and unrealistic for us.  We didn’t know how to handle this new challenge we faced.

2_new_apartments_for_sale_MallorcaHowever, as I have preached that we are going through “Journey of Faith” in 2016, I had to place my faith in God.  Sure enough, God had revealed His provision.  I believe the place we will be moving into is prepared by God.  It is everything we have been hoped for (there are many things we wished for) except the fact that we HAVEN’T seen the place yet (btw, this picture is not the new place)!

We have agreed  to move in even though we haven’t seen the place yet because I am confident that if this is the place God had prepared for us, it will be perfect for us.  Maybe not what we asked for but it will be a great place for us.

“‘For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,’ declares the LORD”  (Isa. 55:8).  His thoughts are more deeper than mine and His ways are far better than mine.  I hope and pray that you, too, will trust in Him regardless what you face today or tomorrow.

Have a blessed week!

Our Life is like an Embroidery

embroideryGod is at work in our lives to produce a beautiful tapestry.  From our perspective here on earth we only see the back of the embroidery.  But the front reveals a beautiful picture.  We are looking at the underneath side and don’t understand why it looks so ugly, why it seems so confusing.  It is impossible for us to understand all the different knots and colors and seemingly random directions our lives have taken.

But one day, we will finally be able to see from the top side this tapestry  God has been weaving of us.  We will then be able to see how the seasons of pain brought some rich, vibrant colors to our tapestry.  We will see the fullness and richness of the design reflected in the seasons of joy and celebration.  We will see the depth of character revealed through the times of testing and trusting. Therefore, we must continue to trust that He is at work and that He is working for our good!

God had never promised to Israelite that the journey to the Promised Land was going to be easy or without challenges.  In fact, even in the Promised Land, they had to fight for it but one thing God did promise is that he will be with them.  “for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go”  (Joshua 1:9b).

Though what you are going through today maybe like the back of embroidery… not so pretty and confusing, but trust God and His wonderful plan for your life.

Have a blessed week!

Tucking in My Children

father-tucking-in-his-son

While my daughters were back at home during Christmas and New Year break, one of the blessing for me is tucking them in at night.  My children are not little anymore (in college and out college definitely don’t consider little) but they asked me to tuck them in at night!  Same thing with Austin even if he is in high school (not every night but time to time).

What a blessing and honor it is for me.  I wouldn’t pass that for any reason.  Though when I was a younger father, tucking them in at night was tiring and at times annoyed because I was tired, too.  How I misunderstood!  I LOVE tucking them in and hope to do this continually.

Though I have never been tucked in by my physical father (because he passed away when I was really young), I feel God is “tucking me in” as I fall asleep as Psalm 127:2b says, “for he gives his beloved sleep”.  Whatever you may have gone through each day or have to deal with the next day, remember God loves you and will give you rest as you rest in Him.

Have a blessed week!
